Miss Wood - Year 3

Kestrel 

Hello, I am Miss Wood and I am the teacher of our fabulous Kestrel Class. The fabulous  Mrs  Leng also works with our class to help us with our learning. 

Kestrel Class

We have a beautiful classroom with a spectacular view of the school field and environmental area. Situated outside our classroom is a balcony which we share with Kingfisher Class. We love to go out there and use it for outside learning, wet play and golden time! We are so lucky to have such a beautiful school and we especially love tending to our patch in the environmental area!

Our week consists of lots of fun and exciting lessons, including French. Every morning we have phonics  and spellings lessons and practise our beautiful joined up handwriting. Every morning we have English and Maths lessons and then in the afternoon we get to explore Science, History, Geography, RE, Computing, PSHE, PE and Music.

 

Daily Routine

Year Three's are let in through the double doors at the front of the school, next to the main office. This is also where the children leave from at the end of the day.

Doors Open at 8.45 am  and Close at 8.55 am

9:00 am Registration: during this time the children practice class spellings, handwriting or a thinking task.

9:10am :  Phonics and Spellings

9:30am  Daily Mile

9:45am: English

10:50 - 11:05am: Break and Snack Time

11:05am : Mathematics

12:05pm: PE / Foundation Subjects

1:00pm - 2:00pm: Lunch Time.

2:15pm - 2:30pm: Mental Maths

2:30 - 3:30pm:  PE / Foundation Subject

3:30pm: Home time

 

Daily Mile

Roecroft is one of the first schools in Central Bedfordshire to adopt this fantastic initiative.

Year 3 and 4 complete a daily mile when the weather conditions are suitable for use to use the field.

Year 3 Curriculum Overview

Phonics and Spelling Programme

In Key Stage 2 we continue with the Read Write Inc. phonics and spelling programme. Once the phonics programme has been completed children move onto the spelling programme. Children are placed in groups according to which spelling patterns they need to work on. The spelling patterns studied are those in the National Curriculum. Spelling lessons take place every day between 9:10am and 9:30am. A spelling homework sheet is given out every Friday, the children should work on the spelling pattern at home alongside the learning taking place each day in school. The spelling test will take place every Friday. Children’s results will be sent home the following week.

Mental Maths Programme

In Key Stage 2 we are currently running a mental maths programme alongside our daily Maths whole class teaching. Children are grouped based on their current stage of learning in the Mathematics curriculum. Children work on a range of mental maths problems each day, with a whole class mental maths session taking place each Friday. The programme is designed to consolidate core learning in all areas of Maths.

P.E

Kestrel Classes P.E days are on a Monday for indoor PE and Thursday Outdoor PE.

All children need to have both indoor and outdoor PE kit in school as we use the outdoor area for PE all year round.

Indoor PE Kit: A white round necked T shirt and black shorts.

Outdoor PE Kit: A white round necked T shirt, black tracksuit bottoms, a tracksuit top, trainers or plimsolls and a separate pair of socks.

Long hair should be tied up for PE and earrings should be removed or covered with micropore tape.

Homework 

Children’s spellings should be practiced daily alongside their class times tables. Children are expected to be reading frequently throughout the week at home to an adult. Learning logs are sent home each Friday with a task to be completed and returned to school by the following Thursday.

Reading and Library Books

Kestrel Classes Library session is on a Friday, if children return their library book they are able to choose a new library book each week.

In year 3 the children can change their reading book when they have finished reading it and are ready for the next book. When you have read with your child please sign the reading record or add comments about their reading.

When your child is ready to change their book please ensure you have signed the reading record to say that they have finished their book.
