Roecroft Lower School

Mr Stephen - Year 3

Hello, I am Mr Stephen and I am the teacher of our wonderful Kestrel Class. The fabulous Miss Kenny also works with our class to help us with our learning.

Kestrel Class

We have a beautiful classroom with a spectacular view of the school field and environmental area. Situated outside our classroom is a balcony which we share with Kingfisher Class. We love to go out there and use it for outside learning, wet play and golden time! We are so lucky to have such a beautiful school and we especially love tending to our patch in the environmental area!

Our week consists of lots of fun and exciting lessons, including French. Every morning we have phonics  and spellings lessons and practise our beautiful joined up handwriting. Every morning we have English and Maths lessons and then in the afternoon we get to explore Science, History, Geography, RE, Computing, PSHE, PE and Music.

Daily Routine

Year Threes are let in through the double doors at the front of the school, next to the main office. Kestrel class will leave from the Swan classroom doors at the end of the day.

The school day starts at 8.45am and ends at 3:30pm.

Morning break is at 10:50 am. In Key Stage 2, children are encouraged to bring in a healthy snack to have at break time this could be fruit, vegetables, rice cakes or a small sandwich.  Milk is available for children to drink at break time if paid for by the parents or carers.  Contact the office for more information on this.

Year 3 Curriculum Overview 2020-21

Phonics and Spelling Programme

In Key Stage 2 we continue with the Read Write Inc. phonics and spelling programme. Once the phonics programme has been completed children move onto the spelling programme. Children are placed in groups according to which spelling patterns they need to work on. The spelling patterns studied are those in the National Curriculum. Spelling lessons take place every day. A spelling homework sheet is given out every Friday, the children should work on the spelling pattern at home daily alongside the learning that takes place in each day in school. The spelling test will take place every Friday. Children's results will be sent home the following week.

PE lessons will be taking place indoors and outdoors this term, so please remember that children will need to come in to school wearing their PE kits on both relevant days each week. Please also ensure your child has warm clothing to wear outside, including trainers as we use the field all year round.

Indoor PE kit (Monday): A white round necked t-shirt, black shorts.

Outdoor PE kit (Friday): A white round necked t-shirt, black jogging bottoms, a warm black zip up tracksuit top, trainers and a separate pair of socks (if wearing tights).

All long hair should be tied back for PE lessons and earrings should be removed or covered with micropore tape if recently pierced.

Children’s spellings should be practised daily alongside children using DoodleMaths, DoodleEnglish and Times Tables Rockstars.

Children are expected to be reading frequently throughout the week at home to an adult.  Please sign their reading record when reading has been completed so their book can be changed.

Reading and Library Books

Kestrel classes library session is on a Wednesday. Children will be able to choose their own book to share and enjoy in the classroom. They have the opportunity to choose from a range of texts from a variety of genres.

In Year 3 children can change their reading book on a Wednesday when they have finished reading it and are ready for the next book. Off-Scheme Readers can change their reading book on any day.

When your child is ready to change their book please ensure you have signed their reading record and say they have finished their book.
