Miss Aris - Year 4

Hello, I am Miss Thomas and I am extremely excited to be the teacher of Hawk Class. We are lucky to have the wonderful Miss Sumal to support us in our learning too! You will find the pupils of Hawk class working very hard on the top floor of the school in our bright, spacious and well-equipped classroom – the perfect learning environment!

Our aim in year four is for the children to be ready to move on to Middle School with confidence;  happy in the knowledge that they are well prepared for the next big step in their education.

PE kits should contain both indoor and outdoor wear (shorts, t-shirt, black hoodie, black jogging bottoms, trainers). Please ensure PE kits are in school for the whole week as PE times may change.

Daily Mile

Roecroft is one of the first schools in Central Bedfordshire to adopt this fantastic initiative. Year 3 and 4 complete a daily mile when the weather conditions are suitable for use to use the field.

Children’s spellings should be practised daily alongside their class times tables. Times tables can be practised through ‘Times Table Rockstar’ and the ‘Doodle Maths’ app. Children should also complete their daily tasks on ‘Doodle Maths.’ Additionally, children are expected to be reading frequently throughout the week at home to an adult.

Phonics and Spelling Programme

In Key Stage 2 we continue with the Read Write Inc. phonics and spelling programme. Once the phonics programme has been completed, children move onto the spelling programme. Children are placed in groups according to which spelling patterns they need to work on. The spelling patterns studied are those in the National Curriculum. Spelling lessons take place every day between 9:10am and 9:30am. A spelling homework sheet is given out every Friday, the children should work on the spelling pattern at home alongside the learning taking place each day in school. The spelling test will take place every Friday. Children’s results will be sent home the following week.

Mental Maths Programme

In Key Stage 2 we are currently running a mental maths programme alongside our daily Maths whole class teaching. Children are grouped based on their current stage of learning in the Mathematics curriculum. Children work on a range of mental maths problems each day, with a whole class mental maths session taking place each Monday. The programme is designed to consolidate core learning in all areas of Maths.
